RESOLUTION
WHEREAS, Honorable Alan Joel Greiman has been called to eternal life by the wisdom of God at the age of 90; and
WHEREAS, The Chicago City Council has been informed of his passing by Alderman Edward M. Burke; and
WHEREAS, Judge Greiman was preceded in death by his first wife Carole (Lanoff), and is survived by his wife, Julie Hamos, his daughters and their spouses, Laurie Greiman and Peter Walton, Lori and Rich Coyle, Judy Greiman and David Knishkowy, Jodi and Michael Moran, Tami Friedman, Bunny and Stu Evans, his grandchildren, and his great grandchildren; and
WHEREAS, He was born in Chicago, Illinois to Maurice and Natalie Greiman; and
WHEREAS, He received his Bachelor's and Law Degrees from the University of Illinois and was admitted to the Illinois Bar in 1955 and practiced law in Skokie, Illinois; and
WHEREAS, He served in the Illinois House of Representatives from 1972 to 1987 and became the Assistant Majority Leader where he sponsored the Illinois Domestic Violence Act, as well as legislation granting no-fault divorce and the right to public employee collective bargaining, prohibiting the sale of handguns, banning discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation, protecting newsrooms from unreasonable searches, and was the first in the nation to propose a ban on discrimination based on age; and
WHEREAS, In 1987, he was appointed to the Illinois Circuit Court for Cook County, Illinois; and
WHEREAS, In 1991, Judge Greiman was appointed to the Illinois Appellate Court and became its Chief Justice; and
WHEREAS, As a judge, he instituted a celebrated mediation program and other innovations that resulted in speedier resolutions of cases; and
WHEREAS, Judge Greiman devoted his career to equality and justice and was an advocate, a lawyer, a legislator, and a Jurist; and
WHEREAS, To his beloved family, Judge Alan Joel Greiman imparts a legacy of faithfulness, service and dignity; now, therefore
BE IT RESOLVED, That we, the Mayor and the members ofthe Chicago City Council, assembled this twenty-third day of February, 2022, do hereby commemorate Judge Alan Joel Greiman for his grace-filled life and do hereby express our condolences to his family; and
