RESOLUTION
WHEREAS, The Honorable Sophie Masloff has been called to eternal life by the wisdom of God at the age of 96; and
WHEREAS, The Chicago City Council has been informed of her passing by Alderman Edward M. Burke; and
WHEREAS, The Honorable Sophie Masloff was the 56th Mayor of the City of Pittsburgh and the loving wife for more than 50 years of the late Jack; and
WHEREAS, The Honorable Sophie Masloff was the much-adored mother of Sue, the grandmother of two and the great-grandmother of one; and
WHEREAS, The Honorable Sophie Masloff began her career in public service at the age of 18 working as a clerk for the Allegheny County Court of Common Pleas; and
WHEREAS, The Honorable Sophie Masloff worked as a civil servant for three decades before winning a seat on the Pittsburgh City Council during a special election in 1976; and
WHEREAS, The Honorable Sophie Masloff was a member of the City Council until 1994 when she became the first female Mayor of the City of Pittsburgh; and
WHEREAS, The Honorable Sophie Masloff served as Mayor until 1994 as the City grappled with enormous economic challenges due to the collapse of the steel industry; and
WHEREAS, During her esteemed tenure, the Honorable Sophie Masloff initiated efficiencies in government and twice cut the city wage tax to reduce the flight of city residents to the suburbs; and
WHEREAS, The hard work, sacrifice and dedication of the Honorable Sophie Masloff serve as an example to all; and
WHEREAS, The Honorable Sophie Masloff will be dearly missed and fondly remembered by her many relatives, friends and admirers; and
WHEREAS, To her beloved family, the Honorable Sophie Masloff imparts a legacy of faithfulness, service and dignity; now, therefore
BE IT RESOLVED, That we, the Mayor and the members of the Chicago City Council, assembled this tenth day of September, 2014, do hereby commemorate for her grace-filled life and do hereby express our condolences to her family; and
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be presented to the family of the Honorable Sophie Masloff.
