RESOLUTION

 

 

WHEREAS, Thomas Van Dyke King has been called to eternal life by the wisdom of God at the age of 91; and

 

WHEREAS, The Chicago City Council has been informed of his passing by Alderman Edward M. Burke; and

 

WHEREAS, Thomas Van Dyke King was a widely admired Chicago business leader and the loving husband of the late Barbara Ann Scott, the former Olympic figure skating champion; and

 

WHEREAS, Thomas Van Dyke King was the much-adored father of Thomas Jr. and Shelley, the grandfather of three and the great-grandfather of four to whom he imparted many of the fine and noble qualities that he possessed in abundance; and

 

WHEREAS, Thomas Van Dyke King was Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Seay & Thomas, Inc., a Chicago-based commercial real estate firm, and Chairman of Amelia Development Company; and

 

WHEREAS, Thomas Van Dyke King was also Chairman of the Board for the United States Operations of Matra Transit, Inc., a conglomerate that constructed the "people mover" at O'Hare International Airport; and

 

WHEREAS, Thomas Van Dyke King was associated with the Merchandise Mart Properties for 28 years and was President of the Mart Centers for eleven years; and

 

WHEREAS, During his long and highly successful career, Thomas Van Dyke King was a member of the Board of Directors of the New York Stock Exchange, the Chicago Board of Trade and the Mid-America Commodity Exchange; and

 

WHEREAS, For the past 17 years Thomas Van Dyke King was a resident of Amelia Island, Florida; and

 

WHEREAS, The hard work, sacrifice and dedication of Thomas Van Dyke King serve as an example to all; and

 

WHEREAS, His love of life and ability to live it to the fullest endeared Thomas Van Dyke King to his family members, friends and all who knew him, and enabled him to enrich their lives in ways they will never forget; and

 

 

WHEREAS, Thomas Van Dyke King was an individual of great integrity and accomplishment who will be dearly missed and fondly remembered by his many relatives, friends and admirers; and

 

WHEREAS, To his beloved family, Thomas Van Dyke King imparts a legacy of faithfulness, service and dignity; now, therefore

 

BE IT RESOLVED, That we, the Mayor and the members of the Chicago City Council assembled this eighteenth day of November, 2015 do hereby commemorate Thomas Van Dyke King for his grace-filled life and do hereby express our condolences to his family; and

 

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be presented to the family of Thomas Van Dyke King.
