RESOLUTION
 
WHEREAS, Hiram Grau is an outstanding citizen and the first Hispanic appointed Director of the Illinois State Police by Governor Pat Quinn on April 11, 2011 and unanimously confirmed by the Illinois State Legislature; and
 
WHEREAS, prior to that appointment, Director Grau was the Deputy Chief of the Cook County State's Attorney's Office of Investigations Bureau, where he oversaw the Narcotics/Special and Municipal Investigations Division; and
 
WHEREAS, a 28 year veteran of the Chicago Police Department, Director Grau spent 28 years with the Chicago Police Department in numerous commands before retiring in 2008 as the Acting First Deputy in charge of the day to day operations of the Department; and
 
WHEREAS, born in Puerto Rico, Grau grew up at Grand and Ogden avenues in the Patch neighborhood of Chicago, and graduated from Holy Trinity High School before taking the police exam and beginning an exemplary career.
 
WHEREAS, Director Grau earned a Master's Degree in Business Administration from Saint Xavier University and promptly applied those skills throughout his career in law enforcement; and
 
WHEREAS, throughout his law enforcement career, Director Grau has received hundreds of special commendations, honorable mentions and recognition awards that include 12 Department Commendations; 102 Honorable Mentions, A Special Commendation Award; A Chicago Police Department Unit Meritorious Award; and
 
WHEREAS, Director Grau also received a Cook County State's Attorney's Recognition Award; An FBI Appreciation Award; An FBI Chicago Joint Task Force on Gangs Award of Merit; A Joint Operations Award; and hundreds of Complimentary Letters; and
 
WHEREAS, Director Grau is a decorated Vietnam veteran and the recipient of 4 medals serving the U.S. Army's 101st Airborne Division, and has received numerous awards and honors for his dedicated public service and law enforcement achievements; and
 
WHEREAS, The Honorable Edward M. Burke, Alderman of the 14th Ward, has appraised this august body of Director Grau's significant milestone; NOW THEREFORE
 
BE IT RESOLVED, that we, the Mayor and members of the City of Chicago Council, congratulates Illinois State Police Director Hiram Grau on the occasion of his retirement and for all of his efforts during his remarkable career in law enforcement;
 
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that a suitable copy of this resolution shall be prepared and presented to Director Hiram Grau.
