RESOLUTION
WHEREAS, Anna Mae Hays has been called to eternal life by the wisdom of God at the age of 97; and
WHEREAS, The Chicago City Council has been informed of her passing by Alderman Edward M. Burke; and
WHEREAS, A native of Buffalo, New York, Anna Mae Hays was an Army nurse who became the first female General in American military history; and
WHEREAS, The daughter of Salvation Army officers, Anna Mae Hays served in World War II, the Korean War and headed the 4,500 person Army Nurse Corps through the bloodiest years of the Vietnam War; and
WHEREAS, On June 11, 1970 Anna Mae Hays was promoted to the one-star rank of Brigadier General in a Pentagon ceremony attended by former First Lady Mamie Eisenhower, the wife of one of her former patients, the late President Dwight D. Eisenhower; and
WHEREAS, Anna Mae Hays served from 1942 to 1971 and was the recipient of numerous awards including the Distinguished Service Medal and was twice decorated with the Legion of Merit; and
WHEREAS, Anna Mae Hays was the wife of the late William who directed Sheltered Workshops, an organization that provided employment for disabled people in Washington, D.C.; and
WHEREAS, The hard work, sacrifice and dedication of Anna Mae Hays serve as an example to all; and
WHEREAS, Anna Mae Hays was an individual of great integrity and accomplishment who will be dearly missed and fondly remembered by her many relatives, friends and admirers; and
WHEREAS, To her beloved family, Anna Mae Hays imparts a legacy of faithfulness, service and dignity; now, therefore
BE IT RESOLVED, That we, the Mayor and the members of the Chicago City Council, assembled this seventeenth day of January, 2018, do hereby commemorate Anna Mae Hays for her grace-filled life and do hereby express our condolences to her family; and
