RESOLUTION
WHEREAS, The Honorable Sergei Bagapsh has been called to eternal life by the wisdom of God at the age of sixty-two; and
WHEREAS, The City Council has been informed of his passing by Alderman Edward M. Burke; and
WHEREAS, The Honorable Sergei Bagapsh was the second President of the Republic of Abkhazia and was credited with leading the breakaway region of Georgia to independence; and
WHEREAS, An able political leader of strength and vision, the Honorable Sergei Bagapsh was elected to the presidency in 2005; and
WHEREAS, The Honorable Sergei Bagapsh served as the Managing Director of the Abkhazian state-owned power company from 2000 to 2004; and
WHEREAS, From 1997 through 1999, the Honorable Sergei Bagapsh served as the region's Prime Minister; and
WHEREAS, A loyal supporter of Abkhazia's friendship and alliance with Russia, the Honorable Sergei Bagapsh worked diligently to maintain positive relations between the two countries; and
WHEREAS, The sacrifice and dedication of the Honorable Sergei Bagapsh serve as an example to all; and
WHEREAS, His love of life and ability to live it to the fullest endeared the Honorable Sergei Bagapsh to his family members, friends and all who knew him, and enabled him to enrich their lives in ways they will never forget; and
WHEREAS, The Honorable Sergei Bagapsh will be dearly missed and fondly remembered by his many relatives, friends and colleagues; and
WHEREAS, To his beloved family, the Honorable Sergei Bagapsh imparts a legacy of faithfulness, service and dignity; now, therefore
BE IT RESOLVED, That we, the Mayor and the members of the Chicago City Council, assembled this eighth day of June , 2011, do hereby commemorate the Honorable Sergei Bagapsh for his grace-filled life and do hereby express our condolences to his family; and
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be presented to the family of the Honorable Sergei Bagapsh.
