MEMORIAL RESOLUTION
WHEREAS, It is with great sadness that members of this Chamber learned of the death of the Honorable Calvin R. Sutker; and
WHEREAS, The City Council has been informed of his passing by Margaret Laurino, Alderman ofthe 39th Ward; and
WHEREAS, Married to the late Phyllis, nee Twery, for 60 years, Cal Sutker was the devoted father of Sharon Sutker McGowan (Jim McGowan), Shelley Sutker-Dermer (Kenneth Dermer), Edie Sue Sutker (David Richmond) and Allen Sutker (Karen Sutker). He was the loving grandfather of Jennifer and Joshua McGowan, Elana and Jake Dermer and Dani, Niki, Tommy and Teddy Sutker; the dear brother of Irwin (the late Carla) Sutker and Ada (Beryl) Rabinowitz; brother-in-law of Marsha Kline and the late David Kline. Cal will be fondly remembered by many nieces, nephews, grandnieces, grandnephews and a long line of friends.
WHEREAS, A proud Word War II veteran, Cal Sutker enlisted in the U.S. Army in 1942, serving in Germany, France and Austria. On April 29, 1945, his battalion was among the first to enter the Dachau concentration camp to liberate prisoners; and
WHEREAS, Cal Sutker devoted his life to public service and held office for more than four decades, and was elected to the Skokie Village Board, the Illinois House of Representatives, and the Cook County Board. He has also served as the Democratic Committeeman of Niles Township, a position he held for 33 years, and as Illinois State Central Committeeman, Chairman ofthe Illinois Democratic Party, and Democratic National Committeeman; and
WHEREAS, As an elected official, Cal Sutker had many proud accomplishments including, passing one ofthe first fair housing ordinances in the State of Illinois, strongly supporting increased state spending for public education, and being instrumental in acquiring the property that would become the Illinois Holocaust Museum and Education Center in Skokie; and
