RESOLUTION
WHEREAS, Richard "Dick" F. Gordon Jr. has been called to eternal life by the wisdom of God at the age of 88; and
WHEREAS, The Chicago City Council has been informed of his passing by Alderman Edward M. Burke; and
WHEREAS, Richard "Dick" F. Gordon Jr. was a retired NASA astronaut and the loving and devoted husband of the late Linda; and
WHEREAS, Richard "Dick" F. Gordon Jr. was the much-adored father of six children, the stepfather of two and the grandfather of five to whom he imparted many of the fine and noble qualities that he possessed in abundance; and
WHEREAS, Richard "Dick" F. Gordon Jr. was one of 24 Americans who flew to the moon; and
WHEREAS, Richard "Dick" F. Gordon Jr. was a test pilot and chemist when he was picked for NASA's third group of astronauts in 1963; and
WHEREAS, Richard "Dick" F. Gordon Jr. flew on Gemini 11 in 1966 and Apollo 12 in 1969; and
WHEREAS, During the two flights, Richard "Dick" F. Gordon Jr. was in space for nearly 316 hours; and
WHEREAS, After retiring from NASA in 1972, Richard "Dick" F. Gordon Jr. served as Executive Vice President of the New Orleans Saints football team; and
WHEREAS, Richard "Dick" F. Gordon Jr. later worked as an executive for energy and science companies; and
WHEREAS, The hard work, sacrifice and dedication of Richard "Dick" F. Gordon Jr. serve as an example to all; and
WHEREAS, His love of life and ability to live it to the fullest endeared Richard "Dick" F. Gordon Jr. to his family members, friends and all who knew him, and enabled him to enrich their lives in ways they will never forget; and
WHEREAS, To his beloved family, Richard "Dick" F. Gordon Jr. imparts a legacy of faithfulness, service and dignity; now, therefore
BE IT RESOLVED, That we, the Mayor and the members of the Chicago City Council, assembled this fifteenth day of November, 2017, do hereby commemorate Richard "Dick" F. Gordon Jr. for his grace-filled life and do hereby express our condolences to his family; and
