RESOLUTION


WHEREAS, Monsignor John J. Moriarty has been called to eternal life by the wisdom of God at the age of 81; and

WHEREAS, The Chicago City Council has been informed of his passing by Alderman Edward M. Burke; and

WHEREAS, Monsignor John J. Moriarty was a longtime missionary who ministered in Ecuador for more than 40 years; and

WHEREAS, The son of Irish immigrants from County Kerry, Monsignor John J. Moriarty was raised in Chicago where his father worked on the City's sewer system; and

WHEREAS, Monsignor John J. Moriarty was ordained to the priesthood in the early 1960s and joined the Boston-based Missionary Society of St. James the Apostle; and

WHEREAS, Monsignor John J. Moriarty was sent to Ecuador where he built churches, schools and clinics and arranged for free medical care, food and housing to be provided for the poor; and

WHEREAS, Affectionately known as "Pedro Juan", Monsignor John J. Moriarty became highly fluent in the Spanish language and Ecuadorian customs; and

WHEREAS, Monsignor John J. Moriarty helped more than 200 seminarians in Ecuador become priests; and

WHEREAS, In his retirement, Monsignor John J. Moriarty resided in the Beverly community where he decorated his home with carvings from the rainforest; and

WHEREAS, The holiness, sacrifice and dedication of Monsignor John J. Moriarty serve as an example to all; and

WHEREAS, Monsignor John J. Moriarty will be dearly missed and fondly remembered by his many relatives, friends and admirers; and

WHEREAS, To his brother, Thomas, and his four sisters, Sister Kathleen R.S.M., Mary, Barbara and Irene, Monsignor John J. Moriarty imparts a legacy of faithfulness, service and dignity; now, therefore

BE IT RESOLVED, That we, the Mayor and the members of the Chicago City Council, assembled this tenth day of February, 2016, do hereby commemorate Monsignor John J. Moriarty for his grace-filled life and do hereby express our condolences to his family; and
