RESOLUTION
WHEREAS, Gwen Ifill has gone to her eternal reward at the age of 61; and
WHEREAS, The Chicago City Council has been informed of her passing by Alderman Edward M. Burke; and
WHEREAS, Gwen Ifill was a veteran newspaper and broadcast journalist and co-anchor of the NewsHour on PBS; and
WHEREAS, Gwen Ifill moderated the vice presidential debates in 2004 and 2008 and was the author of the book, "The Breakthrough: Politics and Race in the Age of Obama"; and
WHEREAS, A native of New York City, Gwen Ifill graduated from Simmons College in Boston, Massachusetts and wrote for newspapers including the Boston Herald-American, the Baltimore Evening Sun, the Washington Post and the New York Times; and
WHEREAS, Gwen Ifill joined NBC news before moving to PBS in 1999 as host of Washington Week and was named co-anchor of the NewsHour program in 2013; and
WHEREAS, Gwen Ifill was an award-winning journalist who will be remembered by her colleagues as "a calm and perceptive voice in the midst of turmoil"; and
WHEREAS, Throughout her highly prominent career, Gwen Ifill was a much respected mentor to many of her colleagues; and
WHEREAS, The hard work, sacrifice and dedication of Gwen Ifill serve as an example to all; and
WHEREAS, To her beloved family, Gwen Ifill imparts a legacy of faithfulness, service and dignity; now, therefore
BE IT RESOLVED, That we, the Mayor and the members of the Chicago City Council, assembled this sixteenth day of November, 2016, do hereby commemorate Gwen Ifill for her grace-filled life and do hereby express our condolences to her family; and
