RESOLUTION
 
 
WHEREAS, Dr. Jerry Umanos lost his life in war-torn Afghanistan while treating children at the Cure International Hospital in western Kabul; and
 
WHEREAS, The Chicago City Council has been informed of his passing by Alderman Edward M. Burke; and
 
WHEREAS, Dr. Jerry Umanos was among three Americans killed when an Afghan security guard assigned to protect the hospital suddenly opened fire and then turned the gun on himself; and
 
WHEREAS, A graduate of Wayne State University Medical School, Dr. Jerry Umanos dedicated his professional life to treating poor, inner-city patients in Chicago's Lawndale neighborhood; and
 
WHEREAS, More than seven years ago, Dr. Jerry Umanos took his skills as a healer to Afghanistan where he ably served as a member of the medical staff at the hospital operated by a United States-based Christian charity; and
 
WHEREAS, A true humanitarian and a champion of the children of Afghanistan, Dr. Jerry Umanos practiced pediatric medicine and taught medical residents; and
 
WHEREAS, The compassion, sacrifice and dedication of Dr. Jerry Umanos serve as an example to all; and
 
WHEREAS, Dr. Jerry Umanos will be dearly missed and fondly remembered by his many relatives, friends and admirers; and
 
WHEREAS, To his loving wife, Jan Schuitema, and his beloved family, Dr. Jerry Umanos imparts a legacy of faithfulness, service and dignity; now, therefore
 
 
BE IT RESOLVED, That we, the Mayor and the members of the Chicago City Council, assembled this thirtieth day of April, 2014, do hereby commemorate Dr. Jerry Umanos for his grace-filled life and do hereby express our condolences to his family; and
 
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be presented to the family of Dr. Jerry Umanos.
