RESOLUTION


WHEREAS, John Whitman has gone to his eternal reward at the age of 71; and

WHEREAS, The Chicago City Council has been informed of his passing by Alderman Edward M. Burke; and

WHEREAS, John Whitman was a prominent investment banker and the loving husband of former New Jersey Governor Christine Todd Whitman; and

WHEREAS, John Whitman was the much-adored father of Taylor and Kate and the grandfather of six to whom he imparted many of the fine and noble qualities that he possessed in abundance; and

WHEREAS, John Whitman was the dear brother of Charles, III and Jan; and

WHEREAS, A native of New York, John Whitman was born in Albany on June 8, 1944, the grandson of former New York Governor Charles Whitman, Sr.; and

WHEREAS, John Whitman graduated from Yale University and Harvard Business School; and

WHEREAS, John Whitman was a founder and managing partner of Princeton-based Sycamore Ventures and previously held positions at Prudential-Bache and Citicorp; and

WHEREAS, John Whitman bravely served his country as a 1st Lieutenant in the United States Army during the Vietnam War and was awarded two bronze stars, including one with a "V" for valor; and

WHEREAS, John Whitman was New jersey's first-ever "first gentleman" from 1994 to 2001; and

WHEREAS, John Whitman loved sailing, golf, tennis, mountain biking, ice hockey and dancing; and

WHEREAS, The hard work, sacrifice and dedication of John Whitman serve as an example to all; and

WHEREAS, His love of life and ability to live it to the fullest endeared John Whitman to his family members, friends and all who knew him, and enabled him to enrich their lives in ways they will never forget; and

WHEREAS, John Whitman will be dearly missed and fondly remembered by his many relatives, friends and admirers; and

WHEREAS, To his beloved family, John Whitman imparts a legacy of faithfulness, service and dignity; now, therefore
