RESOLUTION CELEBRATING THE 71 ST WEDDING ANNIVERSARY OF
ARTHUR & ANN EILAND
WHEREAS, On November 27, 2022, Arthur and Ann Eiland celebrate their 71st wedding anniversary; and
WHEREAS, The Chicago City Council has been informed of this occasion by the Honorable Derrick G. Curtis, Alderman ofthe 18th Ward; and
WHEREAS, Ann and Arthur met at an early age, both growing up in Memphis, Tennessee where their families knew each other; and
WHEREAS, Arthur came to Chicago while on vacation in 1942 and stayed, graduating from the Worsham College of Mortuary Science, which at that time was located on Chicago's South Side, and studying at Roosevelt University for two years before becoming a manager of a Black-owned hotel on South Drexel at a time when African American musicians and artists were welcome to perform, but not allowed to stay in the hotels downtown; and
WHEREAS, Arthur welcomed those Black artists that made their way to South Drexel with a room, hot meals, and a place to enjoy the company of other musicians and artists; later, Arthur worked in the wrecking business, and was a long time employee ofthe Archdiocese, where he served as a custodian, a bookkeeper, and ran a City program for youth at the location of the former St. Brendan's; and

WHEREAS, Ann Eiland traveled separately to Chicago with her mother after graduating high school, and she was an employee at her mother's newly established restaurant, on Chicago's West Side; Ann later worked for the City of Chicago at the Englewood Urban Progress Center and the Chicago Water Department; and

WHEREAS, Arthur learned that Ann's family had come to Chicago and the two started dating; they were later married and had seven children, and
WHEREAS, Ann and Arthur's greatest dream was that all of their children would graduate from college, and their six surviving children all have college degrees and beyond; and
