RESOLUTION


WHEREAS, The Honorable Gyorgy Szabad has been called to eternal life by the wisdom of God at the age of 90; and

WHEREAS, The Chicago City Council has been informed of his passing by Alderman Edward M. Burke; and

WHEREAS, The Honorable Gyorgy Szabad was a prominent Hungarian politician and the loving husband of Andrea Sujan; and

WHEREAS, The Honorable Gyorgy Szabad was the much-adored father of Julia to whom he imparted many of the fine and noble qualities that he possessed in abundance; and

WHEREAS, Born in Romania, the Honorable Gyorgy Szabad moved as a child with his family to Budapest and worked as an apprentice gardener; and

WHEREAS, During the Holocaust, the Honorable Gyorgy Szabad was sent to a forced labor camp from which he escaped in October of 1944; and

WHEREAS, In 1945 the Honorable Gyorgy Szabad was recaptured by Soviet troops, sent again to a forced labor camp, and escaped yet again; and

WHEREAS, After the war, the Honorable Gyorgy Szabad served as a university history professor and went on to play a key role in the historic negotiations which gave way to the rise of Hungary's new Democratic government; and

WHEREAS, The Honorable Gyorgy Szabad served from 1990 to 1994 as the Speaker of Hungary's first post-communist Parliament; and

WHEREAS, The hard work, sacrifice and dedication of the Honorable Gyorgy Szabad serve as an example to all; and

WHEREAS, Considered "one of the leading figures of national thought," the Honorable Gyorgy Szabad will be dearly missed and fondly remembered by his many relatives, friends and admirers; and

WHEREAS, To his beloved family, the Honorable Gyorgy Szabad imparts a legacy of faithfulness, service and dignity; now, therefore

BE IT RESOLVED, That we, the Mayor and the members of the Chicago City Council, assembled this twenty-ninth day of July, 2015, do hereby commemorate the Honorable Gyorgy Szabad for his grace-filled life and do hereby express our condolences to his family; and
