WHEREAS, it is with great sadness that members of this Chamber learned ofthe death of Richard Elrod on April 19th, 2014; and
 
WHEREAS, The City Council has been informed of his passing by The Honorable Margaret Laurino, Alderman of the 39th Ward; and
 
WHEREAS, early in his promising career as an assistant corporation counsel, Richard Elrod was present at the 1969 Days of Rage protests in Chicago, and was seriously injured in an altercation with a protester, leaving him with limited mobility in his limbs; and
 
WHEREAS, determined to not allow physical barriers to dictate the future success of his career, he went on to serve one term in the Illinois House of Representatives, four successful and consecutive terms as Cook County Sherriff, and more than 25 years as a Circuit Court judge, and was still, as an octogenarian, a member ofthe Cook County bench at the time of his death; and
 
WHEREAS, known professionally as a sharp and powerful presence in the courtroom and an astute legal mind, Judge Elrod was also active in his community and recognized for his efforts in youth counseling and drug awareness; and
 
WHEREAS, besides his impressive professional career, Richard Elrod was a devoted husband, father, and grandfather. He will be deeply missed, but the memory of his commitment to the protection ofthe people of the City of Chicago, despite his physical limitations, has been a true testament to the spirit of courage and dedication to the service of others; now, therefore
 
BE IT RESOLVED, That we, the mayor and members of the City Council of the City of Chicago, gathered here this thirtieth day of April, 2014, do hereby express our sorrow on the death of Richard Elrod and extend to his family and friends our deepest sympathy; and
