RESOLUTION


WHEREAS, Richard "Dick" Locher has been called to eternal life by the wisdom of God at the age of 88; and
WHEREAS, The Chicago1 City Council has been informed of his passing by Alderman Edward M. Burke; and
WHEREAS, A longtime resident of Naperville, Richard "Dick" Locher was a widely celebrated syndicated cartoonist and the loving husband for 60 years of Mary; and
WHEREAS, Richard "Dick" Locher was the much-adored father of Stephen, Jana and the late John, the grandfather of five and the great-grandfather of one to whom he imparted many of the fine and noble qualities that he possessed in abundance; and
WHEREAS, Richard "Dick" Locher drew the popular "Dick Tracy" comic strip for decades and earned a Pulitzer Prize for editorial cartooning; and
WHEREAS, Richard "Dick" Locher began working on "Dick Tracy" in 1957 with Chester Gould who created it in 1931; and
WHEREAS, Richard "Dick" Locher assumed the role of the strip's artist in 1983 and began writing the storyline in 2005; and
WHEREAS, Richard "Dick" Locher retired from the "Dick Tracy" column in 2011; and
WHEREAS, Richard "Dick" Locher's civic endeavors included service as a Trustee of Benedictine University in Lisle and as a fundraiser for the United Way; and
WHEREAS, Along with artist Donald L. Reed, Richard "Dick" Locher produced a square-jawed sculpture of "Dick Tracy" for Naperville's Riverwalk in 2009; and
WHEREAS, The hard work, talent and dedication of Richard "Dick" Locher serve as an example to all; and
WHEREAS, His love of life and ability to live it to the fullest endeared Richard "Dick" Locher to his family members, friends and all who knew him, and enabled him to enrich their lives in ways they will never forget; and
WHEREAS, To his beloved family, Richard "Dick" Locher imparts a legacy of faithfulness, service and dignity; now, therefore
