RESOLUTION
WHEREAS, The Council of Islamic Organizations of Greater Chicago will honor His Eminence Francis Cardinal George on Wednesday, April 2, 2014, at the organization's annual Appreciation Dinner; and
WHEREAS, The Chicago City Council has been informed of this event by Alderman Edward M. Burke; and
WHEREAS, The Council of Islamic Organizations of Greater Chicago represents 60 mosques, Islamic centers, schools and religious organizations and serves as the voice of 400,000 Muslims in Illinois; and
WHEREAS, More than three-hundred guests will attend the event, including prominent leaders of the Muslim community and the leadership of the Catholic community; and
WHEREAS, The Council of Islamic Organizations of Greater Chicago will recognize Francis Cardinal George for his friendship and support of the Muslim community during his fifteen years as leader of the Archdiocese; and
WHEREAS, Since Francis Cardinal George became Archbishop in 1997, His Eminence has supported Muslims in their involvement in the formation of United Power for Action and Justice (UPAJ), which promotes the freedom to build mosques and Islamic centers; and
WHEREAS, Francis Cardinal George has attended an Iftar in a different mosque each year and participated as an honored guest at annual conventions of the Islamic Society of North America (ISNA) that brings more than 30,000 guests to Chicago; and
WHEREAS, The hard work, sacrifice and dedication of Francis Cardinal George serve as an example to all; now, therefore
BE IT RESOLVED, That we, the Mayor and the members of the Chicago City Council, assembled this second day of April, 2014, do hereby congratulate Francis Cardinal George on receiving this prestigious honor and do hereby recognize his important contributions as an interfaith leader; and
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be presented to Francis Cardinal George.
