RESOLUTION
WHEREAS, Maria von Trapp has been called to eternal life by the wisdom of God at the age of ninety-nine; and
WHEREAS, The Chicago City Council has been informed of her passing by Alderman Edward M. Burke; and
WHEREAS, Maria von Trapp was the last surviving member of the musical family whose escape from Nazi-occupied Austria inspired the "The Sound of Music"; and
WHEREAS, One of seven children of Austrian naval Captain Georg von Trapp and his first wife, Agathe, Maria von Trapp was the last surviving member of the Trapp Family Singers; and
WHEREAS, The musical and Oscar-winning film were loosely based on the book by von Trapp's second wife, who was also named Maria; and
WHEREAS, In 1938 Maria von Trapp escaped with her family from Nazi-occupied Austria and performed concert tours throughout Europe and America; and
WHEREAS, Maria von Trapp eventually settled with her family in Vermont in the early 1940s where they opened a ski lodge in Stowe; and
WHEREAS, Maria von Trapp also served as a missionary in Papau, New Guinea; and
WHEREAS, The hard work, sacrifice and dedication of Maria von Trapp serve as an example to all; and
WHEREAS, Maria von Trapp will be dearly missed and fondly remembered by her many relatives, friends and admirers; and
WHEREAS, To her beloved family, Maria von Trapp imparts a legacy of faithfulness, service and dignity; now, therefore
BE IT RESOLVED, That we, the Mayor and the members of the Chicago City Council, assembled this fifth day of March, 2014, do hereby
commemorate Maria von Trapp for her grace-filled life and do hereby express our condolences to her family; and
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
