RESOLUTION
WHEREAS, On March 26, 2010, U.S. Department of Commerce Secretary Gary Locke announced that the City of Chicago was one of ten nationwide recipients of an American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA) Broadband Technology Opportunities Program (BTOP) grant; and
WHEREAS, The goal of this program is to help bridge the technological divide, boost economic growth, create jobs, and improve education and healthcare across the country; and
WHEREAS, The City of Chicago was awarded a $7 million sustainable broadband adoption grant with an additional $2.3 million applicant-provided match to spur economic development in five neighborhoods in Chicago - Auburn Gresham, Chicago Lawn, Englewood, Humbolt Park and Pilsen; and
WHEREAS; Part of this project - the Smart Communities Program - was to create public computer centers at six community centers for working families and expand workstation capacity at four Business Resource Centers, as well as provide 1,500 residents and small businesses that complete a multi-session training course with laptops and netbooks; now, therefore
BE IT RESOLVED, That we, the Mayor and Members of City Council, assembled this ninth day of March, 2011, do hereby call upon the Chief Information Officer to appear before the Joint Committee of the Committee on Economic, Capital and Technology Development and the Committee on Finance to provide an update on the progress and success of this program.
