RESOLUTION
WHEREAS, The Honorable Helmut Schmidt has been called to eternal life by the wisdom of God at the age of 96; and
WHEREAS, The Chicago City Council has been informed of his passing by Alderman Edward M. Burke; and
WHEREAS, The Honorable Helmut Schmidt was a former Chancellor of West Germany; and
WHEREAS, A veteran public servant, the Honorable Helmut Schmidt served as Chancellor from 1974 to 1982 and led his nation through Cold War tensions, turbulent economic times and terrorist upheavals; and
WHEREAS, The Honorable Helmut Schmidt played a leading role in organizing the first economic summit of industrial powers at Rambouillet, France in 1975, a major economic summit that resulted in the formation of the annual "Group of Seven" meetings; and
WHEREAS, The Honorable Helmut Schmidt also helped to organize the European Monetary System to safeguard European currencies from wild fluctuations and eventually led to the creation of the Euro; and
WHEREAS, The Honorable Helmut Schmidt stood firm against the campaign of violence launched by the Red Army Faction, a terrorist group which orchestrated a wave of attacks in 1977 known as the "German Autumn"; and
WHEREAS, The hard work, sacrifice and dedication of the Honorable Helmut Schmidt serve as an example to all; and
WHEREAS, The Honorable Helmut Schmidt will be dearly missed and fondly remembered by his many relatives, friends and admirers; and
WHEREAS, To his beloved family, the Honorable Helmut Schmidt imparts a legacy of faithfulness, service and dignity; now, therefore
BE IT RESOLVED, That we, the Mayor and the members of the Chicago City Council, assembled this eighteenth day of November, 2015 do hereby commemorate the Honorable Helmut Schmidt for his grace-filled life and do hereby express our condolences to his family; and
