RESOLUTION
 
 
WHEREAS, John S. Tan has been called to eternal life by the wisdom of God at the age of eighty-nine; and
 
WHEREAS, The Chicago City Council has been informed of his passing by Alderman Edward M. Burke; and
 
WHEREAS, John S. Tan was a widely renowned Chinatown civic leader and the loving husband of Rhea; and
 
WHEREAS, John S. Tan was the much-adored father of six children and the grandfather of twelve to whom he imparted many of the fine and noble qualities that he possessed in abundance; and
 
WHEREAS, A native of China, John S. Tan fought against the Japanese in Burma during World War II; and
 
WHEREAS, John S. Tan came to Chicago in 1954 where he earned bachelor degrees in both mechanical and electrical engineering; and
 
WHEREAS, John S. Tan flourished as a businessman and eventually became involved in community development; and
 
WHEREAS, John S. Tan rose to become the Chairman of the Chinese American Development Corporation; and
 
WHEREAS, John S. Tan was a visionary civic leader who played an influential role in the development of Chinatown Square; and
 
WHEREAS, John S. Tan led the acquisition of thirty-two acres of vacant railroad land which became a mix of shops, townhomes and a high-rise senior living center; and
 
WHEREAS, The hard work, sacrifice and dedication of John S. Tan serve as an example to all; and
 
WHEREAS, To his beloved family, John S. Tan imparts a legacy of faithfulness, service and dignity; now, therefore
 
BE IT RESOLVED, That we, the Mayor and the members of the Chicago City Council, assembled this thirteenth day of March, 2013, do hereby commemorate John S. Tan for his grace-filled life and do hereby express our condolences to his family; and
 
 
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be presented to the family of John S. Tan.
