RESOLUTION
WHEREAS, Dale Gardner has been called to eternal life by the wisdom of God at the age of sixty-five; and
WHEREAS, The Chicago City Council has been informed of his passing by Alderman Edward M. Burke; and
WHEREAS, A resident of Divide, Colorado, Dale Gardner was a former NASA astronaut renowned for his actions which saved a satellite in 1984; and
WHEREAS, Dale Gardner flew two space shuttle missions and logged 337 hours in space and 225 Earth orbits; and
WHEREAS, Dale Gardner will be especially remembered for hauling the stranded satellite into the space shuttle Challenger during a 1984 spacewalk; and
WHEREAS, Dale Gardner left NASA after more than eight years of distinguished service and returned to duty as a Commander in the United States Navy; and
WHEREAS, Dale Gardner served as Deputy Director for Space Control at Peterson Air Force Base in Colorado Springs; and
WHEREAS, After his retirement from the Navy in 1990, Dale Gardner worked for TRW, Inc., Northrup Grumman and the National Renewable Energy Laboratory in Golden, Colorado; and
WHEREAS, The hard work, sacrifice and dedication of Dale Gardner serve as an example to all; and
WHEREAS, Dale Gardner will be dearly missed and fondly remembered by his many relatives, friends and admirers; and
WHEREAS, To his beloved family, Dale Gardner imparts a legacy of faithfulness, service and dignity; now, therefore
BE IT RESOLVED, That we, the Mayor and the members of the Chicago City Council, assembled this fifth day of March, 2014, do hereby commemorate Dale Gardner for his grace-filled life and do hereby express our condolences to his family; and
