Resolution

WHEREAS, Donald C. Anderson, with a long career as a teacher, administrator and principal, was chosen by the Mayfair Veterans Committee and the Mayfair Lions Club to be honored at the Salute to American Heroes Ceremony for outstanding public service; and

WHEREAS, The City Council has been informed of this special occasion by The Honorable Margaret Laurino. Alderman of the 39"' Ward; and

WHEREAS, Donald C. Anderson is a native Northwest Sider who graduated from Thorp High School and went on to Quincy University. He graduated from Quincy University in 1979 and began his career as a bilingual English-Spanish teacher in Little Village.

WHEREAS, In 2009, Don became principal at Palmer Elementary School in North Mayfair. Under his leadership. Palmer grew to a level Tier 1 school, which indicates it is one of the best. He is proud of the rising academic expectations, but he is just as proud of the fact that a band, piano club and guitar club were formed which helped the school earn recognition as a Category 1 Fine Arts school. Some of his fondest memories are of the times when he accompanied the band by playing trumpet or keyboards; and

WHEREAS. Don made parent involvement a priority, initiating a program called "Parent University." which offered parents English as Second Language course, training to become volunteer teaching aide, and training to teach reading to their children as well as increasing attendance at the PTA meetings; and

WHEREAS, From the beginning, Don Anderson was impressed by the spirit of the Palmer community and the vibrancy of the Mayfair neighborhood. He credits the improvements during his tenure to the passion and work of staff and parents, and the atmosphere he created that allowed i t to happen; and

WHEREAS. Since retiring this year, Don has worked as a consultant for the Illinois Principals Association, but he maintains close tics in May fair, and looks forward to years of continued involvement; now, therefore,
