RESOLUTION
WHEREAS, Phil Collins has been called to eternal life by the wisdom of God at the age of eighty; and
WHEREAS, The City Council has been informed of his passing by Alderman Edward M. Burke; and
WHEREAS, A longtime resident of Chicago's Northwest Side, Phil Collins was a legendary champion handball player and the devoted husband of Clementine; and
WHEREAS, Known for his power and right hand swing, Phil Collins won seventeen amateur handball tournaments during the 1950s; and
WHEREAS, Enamored with the game from an early age, Phil Collins' speed and coordination were unmatched on the handball court; and
WHEREAS, In his later years, Phil Collins generously mentored younger players and used his celebrity status to promote the sport; and
WHEREAS, In 1989 Phil Collins was inducted into the U.S. Handball Association Hall of Fame; and
WHEREAS, Phil Collins was also a self-taught artist whose lighthouse and seascape paintings were displayed in many Florida restaurants; and
WHEREAS, The hard work, sacrifice and dedication of Phil Collins serve as an example to all; and
WHEREAS, Phil Collins will be dearly missed and fondly remembered by his many relatives, friends and colleagues; and
WHEREAS, To his beloved family, Phil Collins imparts a legacy of faithfulness, service and dignity; now, therefore
BE IT RESOLVED, That we, the Mayor and the members of the Chicago City Council, assembled this thirteenth day of April, 2011, do hereby commemorate Phil Collins for his grace-filled life and do hereby express our condolences to his family; and
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be presented to the family of Phil Collins.
