RESOLUTION


WHEREAS, Joseph Medicine Crow has been called to eternal life by the wisdom of God at the age of 102; and

WHEREAS, The Chicago City Council has been informed of his passing by Alderman Edward M. Burke; and

WHEREAS, Joseph Medicine Crow was a Native American Chief who dedicated much of his life to sharing his tribe's rich tradition and oral history; and

WHEREAS, Raised in a log cabin in Montana's Crow Indian reservation, Joseph Medicine Crow heard stories in his childhood from participants in the Battle of Little Big Horn; and

WHEREAS, Joseph Medicine Crow personally had conversations with Crow scouts who were at the side of General George Armstrong Custer, including his grandmother's brother, White Man Runs Him; and

WHEREAS, An author and lecturer, Joseph Medicine Crow was designated tribal historian by the Crow Tribal Council, a position he held for decades; and

WHEREAS, In 2009 President Barack Obama presented Joseph Medicine Crow with the Presidential Medal of Freedom in recognition of his many contributions to preserving the history of the Crow nation; and

WHEREAS, Joseph Medicine Crow bravely served during World War II as a scout in the United States Army and was a recipient of the Bronze Star and the Legion d'honneur; and

WHEREAS, The hard work, sacrifice and dedication of Joseph Medicine Crow serve as an example to all; and

WHEREAS, Joseph Medicine Crow was an individual of great integrity and accomplishment who will be dearly missed and fondly remembered by his many relatives, friends and admirers; and

WHEREAS, To his beloved family, Joseph Medicine Crow imparts a legacy of faithfulness, service and dignity; now, therefore

BE IT RESOLVED, That we, the Mayor and the members of the Chicago City Council, assembled this thirteenth day of April, 2016, do hereby commemorate Joseph Medicine Crow for his grace-filled life and do hereby express our condolences to his family; and

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution ...
