We are filing with your office for introduction at the March 18, 2020, City Council meeting as a transmittal to the Mayor and City Council of Chicago the recommendation of the Commission on Chicago Landmarks that the Blackwell-Israel Samuel A.M.E. Zion Church Building be designated as a Chicago Landmark.

ORDINANCE
Blackwell-Israel Samuel A.M.E. Zion Church Building 3956 South Langley Avenue
WHEREAS, pursuant to the procedures set forth in the Municipal Code of Chicago (the "Municipal Code"), Sections 2-120-620 through -690, the Commission on Chicago Landmarks (the "Commission") has determined that the Blackwell-Israel Samuel A.M.E. Zion Church Building (the "Building"), located at 3956 South Langley Avenue, Chicago, Illinois, as more precisely described in Exhibit A, attached hereto and incorporated herein, satisfies three (3) criteria for landmark designation as set forth in Section 2-120-620 (1), (4), and (5) of the Municipal Code; and
WHEREAS, the Building has served as a center for community, religion, education, and reform in the Oakland community and Bronzeville neighborhood since 1886; and
WHEREAS, under the Oakland Methodist Episcopal Church, the Building's first congregation, it served as a multi-faceted community center. The...
