RESOLUTION


WHEREAS, Sam Ozaki has been called to eternal life by the wisdom of God at the age of 90; and

WHEREAS, The Chicago City Council has been informed of his passing by Alderman Edward M. Burke; and

WHEREAS, A resident of the North Side, Sam Ozaki was a widely admired educator and the loving husband for 57 years of the late Harue; and

WHEREAS, Sam Ozaki was the much-adored father of Edward, Stephen and Nancy and the grandfather of four to whom he imparted many of the fine and noble qualities that he possessed in abundance; and

WHEREAS, Chicago's first Asian-American Principal, Sam Ozaki worked at Harrison and Lake View high schools before retiring as Taft High School Principal in 1989; and

WHEREAS, During World War II, Sam Ozaki bravely served his country as a member of the 442nd Regimental Combat Team and was a recipient of a Purple Heart; and

WHEREAS, Known for its motto, "Go for broke, shoot the works," the 442nd Regimental Combat Team earned a reputation for its valor and freed the "Lost Battalion" in Vosges, France; and

WHEREAS, Sam Ozaki's entire unit was awarded the Congressional Gold Medal by Congress in 2011; and

WHEREAS, The hard work, sacrifice and dedication of Sam Ozaki serve as an example to all; and

WHEREAS, His love of life and ability to live it to the fullest endeared Sam Ozaki to his family members, friends and all who knew him, and enabled him to enrich their lives in ways they will never forget; and

WHEREAS, Sam Ozaki was an individual of great integrity and accomplishment who will be dearly missed and fondly remembered by his many relatives, friends and admirers; and

WHEREAS, To his beloved family, Sam Ozaki imparts a legacy of faithfulness, service and dignity; now, therefore t

BE IT RESOLVED, That we, the Mayor and the members of the Chicago City Council, assembled this fourteenth day of October 2015, do hereby commemorate Sam Ozaki for his grace-filled life and do hereby express our condolences to his family; and
