RESOLUTION


WHEREAS, Mike Nichols has been called to eternal life by the wisdom of God; and

WHEREAS, The Chicago City Council has been informed of his passing by Alderman Edward M. Burke; and

WHEREAS, A renowned actor, director and comedian, Mike Nichols was the loving husband of Diane Sawyer; and

WHEREAS, Mike Nichols' highly versatile and accomplished career began in.Chicago during the 1950s with The Compass Players, a forerunner of the Second City comedy troupe; and

WHEREAS, Along with comedian Elaine May, Mike Nichols gained national attention as part of the duo Nichols and May; and

WHEREAS, Mike Nichols went on to reach even further heights of fame as both a producer and director; and

WHEREAS, Mike Nichols won the Academy Award for best Director in 1968 for the film The Graduate; and

WHEREAS, Mike Nichols made many other prominent films that included Who's Afraid of Virginia Wool}?, Catch-22, Silkwood and The Birdcage and his theatrical works included original productions of Barefoot in the Park and The Odd Couple; and

WHEREAS, Mike Nichols' films garnered a total of 42 Oscar nominations and seven awards; and

WHEREAS, Mike Nichols was one of a small circle of highly talented artists to have won an Emmy, Grammy, Oscar and Tony Award; and

WHEREAS, The hard work, sacrifice and dedication of Mike Nichols serve as an example to all; and

WHEREAS, His love of life and ability to live it to the fullest endeared Mike Nichols to his family members, friends and all who knew him, and enabled him to enrich their lives in ways they will never forget; and

WHEREAS, Mike Nichols will be dearly missed and fondly remembered by his many relatives, friends and admirers; and

WHEREAS, To his beloved family, Mike Nichols imparts a legacy of faithfulness, service and dignity; now, therefore
