RESOLUTION
WHEREAS, Robert Hoover has been called to eternal life by the wisdom of God at the age of 94; and
WHEREAS, The Chicago City Council has been informed of his passing by Alderman Edward M. Burke; and
WHEREAS, A resident of California, Robert Hoover was a widely admired member of the aviation community; and
WHEREAS, Robert Hoover began flying in 1937 at Barry Field in Nashville, Tennessee, and flew more than 300 types of aircraft throughout his career as a pilot; and
WHEREAS, Robert Hoover went on to enjoy a long and successful career as a World War II fighter pilot who became an aviation legend for his flying skills in testing aircraft and demonstrating their capabilities in air shows; and
WHEREAS, While serving in World War II, Robert Hoover flew more than 50 missions before being shot down, and survived for months in a prisoner-of-war camp before he escaped to safety after stealing a German fighter plane and flying safely to The Netherlands; and
WHEREAS, In addition to his service, Robert Hoover later performed for the public in aerobatic performances across the country; and
WHEREAS, In 2003 Robert Hoover was among the 100 heroes of aviation honored at the First Flight Centennial celebration; and
WHEREAS, In 2007 Robert Hoover was awarded the highest honor by the National Air and Space Museum; and
WHEREAS, The Citation Jets Pilots Association, in conjunction with the Bob Hoover Legacy Foundation, provides scholarships in Robert Hoover's name to students attending Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University; and
WHEREAS, The hard work, sacrifice and dedication of Robert Hoover serve as an example to all; and
WHEREAS, His love of life and ability to live it to the fullest endeared Robert Hoover to his family members, friends, and all who knew him, and enabled him to enrich their lives in ways they will never forget; and
WHEREAS, Robert Hoover was an individual of great integrity and accomplishment who will be dearly missed and fondly remembered by his many relativ...
