RESOLUTION
WHEREAS, The Honorable Betty Roberts has been called to eternal life by the wisdom of God at the age of eighty-eight; and
WHEREAS, The Chicago City Council has been informed of her passing by Alderman Edward M. Burke; and
WHEREAS, A trailblazing politician and jurist, the Honorable Betty Roberts was a member of the Oregon Court of Appeals before becoming the first woman appointed to the Oregon Supreme Court; and
WHEREAS, Before serving on the bench, the Honorable Betty Roberts served as both a member of the Oregon House of Representatives and the State Senate; and
WHEREAS, During her distinguished tenure in the Oregon legislature, the Honorable Betty Roberts co-sponsored the nation's first bottle bill, which increased both recycling rates and overall environmental awareness; and
WHEREAS, Known to many women as "mentor-in-chief", the Honorable Betty Roberts opened countless doors for female attorneys, judges, and politicians in the state of Oregon; and
WHEREAS, Those who knew her best will remember the Honorable Betty Roberts for her strength, humor, fairness, and integrity; and
WHEREAS, The Honorable Betty Roberts was the much-adored mother of Sharon, Jo, John, Jr., and Randy, the grandmother of nine and the great-grandmother of eight; and
WHEREAS, The Honorable Betty Roberts will be dearly missed and fondly remembered by her many relatives, friends, and colleagues; and
WHEREAS, To her beloved family, the Honorable Betty Roberts imparts a legacy of faithfulness, service and dignity; now, therefore
 
BE IT RESOLVED, That we, the Mayor and the members of the Chicago City Council, assembled this twenty-eighth day of July, 2011, do hereby commemorate the Honorable Betty Roberts for her grace-filled life and do hereby express our condolences to her family; and
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be presented to the family of the Honorable Betty Roberts.
