RESOLUTION


WHEREAS, Pera Wirszup, a longtime educator and resident of the Hyde Park community, celebrated the joyful occasion of her One-Hundredth Birthday on January 15, 2015; and

WHEREAS, The Chicago City Council has been informed of this event by Alderman Edward M. Burke; and

WHEREAS, Born and raised in Vilnius, Lithuania, Pera Wirszup married her husband, Izaak, a Holocaust survivor, following World War II; and'

WHEREAS, The couple emigrated to America and studied at, the University of Chicago where Izaak earned a doctorate' degree and served for many years as a widely renowned Professor of Mathematics and Education; and

WHEREAS, Dr. Izaak Wirszup was instrumental in bringing public attention to the vast gaps between American and Soviet schoolchildren in mathematics and dedicated his life to improving mathematics education; and

WHEREAS, Pera Wirszup worked as a store manager for Peck 85 Peck, a luxury apparel store on Michigan Avenue; and

WHEREAS, Pera Wirszup was a Resident Master at the Woodward Court dormitory at the University of Chicago arid taught for many years as a Lecturer in Slavic Languages; and

WHEREAS, A woman of dignity, grace and charm, Pera Wirszup is the mother of Marina Tatar, the grandmother of Carolyn, Dr. Audrey and Lauren Tatar and the much-adored great-grandmother of six; and

WHEREAS, Pera Wirszup's many years of service at the University of Chicago and longstanding commitment to the Hyde Park community are worthy of our great admiration and esteem; and ¦ f '

WHEREAS, Family members and friends of Pera Wirszup celebrated her birthday at a party held at the La Petite Folie Restaurant in Hyde Park on January 11, 2015; now, therefore

BE IT RESOLVED, That we, the Mayor and the members of the Chicago City Council, assembled this 21st day of January, 2015, do hereby congratulate Pera Wirszup on the occasion of her One-Hundredth Birthday and do hereby declare that January 21, 2015, shall be officially recognized as Pera Wirszup Day...
