RESOLUTION
WHEREAS, The Reverend George A. Lane, S.J., a widely admired member of the religious community, celebrated his 80th Birthday and 60 years as a Jesuit priest on July 29, 2014; and
WHEREAS, The Chicago City Council has been informed of this event by Alderman Edward M. Burke; and
WHEREAS, The Reverend George A. Lane, S.J., entered the Jesuit order in 1954 and was ordained a priest on June 8, 1967 at St. Joseph's Church in Aurora; and
WHEREAS, In 1969 the Reverend George A. Lane, S.J., was asked by his provincial superior to join Loyola Press in Chicago; and
WHEREAS, Publishing religious textbooks, the Reverend George A. Lane, became an influential leader in education who taught children "one step removed from the classroom"; and
WHEREAS, The Reverend George A. Lane, S.J., went on to serve at Loyola Press for many decades where he also published books that sought to enrich their faith and spiritual understanding of adults; and
WHEREAS, The Reverend George A. Lane, S.J., is especially proud of his role publishing Cardinal Joseph Bernardin's Gift of Peace in 1997, a book which had a profound impact on readers and spent 16 weeks on the New York Times best sellers list; and
WHEREAS, Following a long and fruitful ministry, the Reverend George A. Lane, S.J., retired as President Emeritus of Loyola Press; and
WHEREAS, The hard work, sacrifice and holiness of the Reverend George A. Lane, S.J., serve as an example to all; now, therefore
BE IT RESOLVED, That we, the Mayor and the members of the Chicago City Council, assembled this thirtieth day of July, 2014, do

hereby commemorate the Reverend George A. Lane, S.J., on the occasion of his 80th Birthday and six decades of priestly service; and
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be presented to the Reverend George A. Lane, S.J.
