RESOLUTION
WHEREAS, The Thirteenth Annual Chicago Polar Plunge will be held at 10 a.m. on March 3, 2013, at the North Avenue Beach; and
WHEREAS, The Chicago City Council has been informed of this event by Alderman Edward M. Burke; and
WHEREAS, Since its inception, many thousands of spirited participants have plunged into the icy waters of Lake Michigan to support Special Children's Charities, an organization that provides funding for Special Olympics Chicago; and
WHEREAS, Special Olympics Chicago fosters the physical and mental health of children and adults with disabilities and provides them with sports training and competitions which allow them to share their gifts, skills, and friendship; and
WHEREAS, The Special Olympics mission has deep roots in the City of Chicago where the first International Special Olympics Games were held in 1968 at Soldier Field; and
WHEREAS, The Chicago Polar Plunge serves as a major fundraising event for Special Children's Charities and raises money for the nearly 5,000 athletes; and
WHEREAS, All of Chicago is invited to come to North Avenue Beach to participate in this event to support this remarkable organization; now, therefore
BE IT RESOLVED, That we, the Mayor and the members of the Chicago City Council, assembled this thirteenth day of February, 2013, do hereby congratulate the Chicago Polar Plunge on thirteen years of success and do hereby declare March 3, 2013 to be Polar Plunge Day in the City of Chicago; and
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be presented to James "Skinny" Sheahan, President of Special Children's Charities.
