RESOLUTION


WHEREAS, Mearl J. Justus has been called to eternal life by the wisdom of God at the age of eighty-one; and

WHEREAS, The Chicago City Council has been informed of his passing by Alderman Edward M. Burke; and

WHEREAS, Mearl J. Justus was a widely admired member of the law enforcement community and the devoted husband for forty-five years of Audrey, nee Boyd; and

WHEREAS, Mearl J. Justus was the much-adored stepfather of Kay McGrew, Debra McNeely and the late Ronald Towler, the grandfather of four and the great-grandfather of three to whom he imparted many of the fine and noble qualities that he possessed in abundance; and

WHEREAS, Mearl J. Justus served with distinction as the Sheriff of St. Clair County for thirty years; and

WHEREAS, Mearl J. Justus previously served for nearly three decades with the Cahokia Police Department where he was Police Chief for twenty years; and

WHEREAS, Mearl J. Justus was a Past President of the Illinois Association of Chiefs of Police and the Illinois Sheriffs Association; and

WHEREAS, A proud veteran of the United States Navy, Mearl J. Justus was actively involved in many local fraternal organizations, including the Cahokia Moose Lodge and the Cahokia Chapter of the Knights of Columbus; and

WHEREAS, The hard work, sacrifice and dedication of Mearl J. Justus serve as an example to all; and

WHEREAS, His love of life and ability to live it to the fullest endeared Mearl J. Justus to his family members, friends and all who knew him, and enabled him to enrich their lives in ways they will never forget; and

WHEREAS, To his beloved family, Mearl J. Justus imparts a legacy of faithfulness, service and dignity; now, therefore

BE IT RESOLVED, That we, the Mayor and the members of the Chicago City Council, assembled this seventeenth day of January, 2013, do hereby commemorate Mearl J. Justus for his grace-filled life and do hereby express our condolences to his family; and
