RESOLUTION
WHEREAS, William H. Sullivan has been called to eternal life by the wisdom of God at the age of ninety; and
WHEREAS, The Chicago City Council has been informed of his passing by Alderman Edward M. Burke; and
WHEREAS, William H. Sullivan was a highly distinguished diplomat and the loving husband of the late Marie; and
WHEREAS, William H. Sullivan was the much-adored father of four children to whom he imparted many of the fine and noble qualities that he possessed in abundance; and
WHEREAS, A native of Rhode Island, William H. Sullivan graduated from Brown University and served in the United States Navy during World War II before joining the diplomats corps; and
WHEREAS, During the administration of President Richard M. Nixon, William H. Sullivan oversaw the "secret war" in Laos and played a key role in ending the nation's military involvement in Vietnam; and
WHEREAS, As an appointee of President Jimmy Carter, William H. Sullivan was the last United States Ambassador to Iran; and
WHEREAS, William H. Sullivan was briefly held hostage in 1977 during an attack on the embassy, an event which occurred eight months prior to the Iran hostage crisis; and
WHEREAS, The hard work, sacrifice and dedication of William H. Sullivan serve as an example to all; and
WHEREAS, To his beloved family, William H. Sullivan imparts a legacy of faithfulness, service and dignity; now, therefore
BE IT RESOLVED, That we, the Mayor and the members of the Chicago City Council, assembled this thirteenth day of November, 2013, do hereby commemorate William H. Sullivan for his grace-filled life and do hereby express our condolences to his family; and
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be presented to the family of Willianft H. Sullivan.
