RESOLUTION
WHEREAS, The Honorable Lucy Baxley has been called to eternal life by the wisdom of God at the age of 78; and
WHEREAS, The Chicago City Council has been informed of her passing by Alderman Edward M. Burke; and
WHEREAS, A resident of Alabama, the Honorable Lucy Baxley was a widely admired member of the political community and the loving wife of Jim Smith; and
WHEREAS, The Honorable Lucy Baxley was the much-adored mother of Louis and Becky to whom she imparted many of the fine and noble qualities that she possessed in abundance; and
WHEREAS, In 2003 the Honorable Lucy Baxley became Alabama's first female Lieutenant Governor and presided over the Senate during her four-year term; and
WHEREAS, The Honorable Lucy Baxley was the last Democrat elected to statewide office in Alabama; and
WHEREAS, The Honorable Lucy Baxley also served as State Treasurer, was elected President of the Alabama Public Service Commission and was the Democratic nominee for Governor in 2006; and
WHEREAS, The hard work, sacrifice and dedication of the Honorable Lucy Baxley serve as an example to all; and
WHEREAS, Her love of life and ability to live it to the fullest endeared the Honorable Lucy Baxley to her family members, friends and all who knew her, and enabled her to enrich their lives in ways they will never forget; and
WHEREAS, The Honorable Lucy Baxley was an individual of great integrity and accomplishment who will be dearly missed and fondly remembered by her many relatives, friends and admirers; and
WHEREAS, To her beloved family, the Honorable Lucy Baxley imparts a legacy of faithfulness, service and dignity; now, therefore
BE IT RESOLVED, That we, the Mayor and the members of the Chicago City Council, assembled this 1st day of November, 2016, do hereby commemorate the Honorable Lucy Baxley for her grace-filled life and do hereby express our condolences to her family; and
