WHEREAS, Sophie Ishiwari (class of 2019) and Isabel Kapustka (Class of 2021) ofthe Walter Payton College Preparatory High School Grizzlies won the Illinois High School Association (IHSA) State Championship Finals in doubles tennis at Buffalo Grove High School on Saturday, October 20, 2018, decisively defeating the reigning 2017 State Champions from Chicago Latin School; and
WHEREAS, the IHSA State Series for girls has been conducted since 1972 with 312 schools . competing for top honors in the 2018 tournament; and
WHEREAS, the Walter Payton College Preparatory High School Grizzlies are coached by Jean Casserly and Marco Berroya; and
WHEREAS, the Chicago City Council has been informed of their impressive triumph by Alderman Edward M. Burke; and
WHEREAS, the 2018 doubles competition commenced during a period of severe inclement weather with gale-force winds, snow showers and high winds and had to be moved indoors to the Northbrook Racquet Club; and
WHEREAS, overcoming these obstacles, Sophie Ishiwari and Isabel Kapustka defeated Annabel Edwards and Elaine Sarazen of Chicago Latin by scores of 6-0; 3-6; and 6-1 in the championship match; and
WHEREAS, over the course of the three-day tournament, Sophie Ishiwari and Isabel Kapustka won seven matches and losing just one set en route to the title; now therefore
BE IT RESOLVED, that we, the Mayor and the members of the Chicago City Council assembled this thirty-first day of October 2018, do hereby congratulate IHSA State Doubles champions Sophie Ishiwari and Isabel Kapustka; their coaches Jean Casserly and Marco Berroya and Athletic Director George Klupchak of the Walter Payton College Preparatory High School Grizzlies on their impressive success; and
