RESOLUTION
 
 
WHEREAS, The Honorable John Y. McCollister has been called to eternal life by the wisdom of God at the age of ninety-two; and
 
WHEREAS, The Chicago City Council has been informed of his passing by Alderman Edward M. Burke; and
 
WHEREAS, The Honorable John Y. McCollister was the loving husband of Betty and the late Nanette; and
 
WHEREAS, The Honorable John Y. McCollister was the much-adored father of John, Steve and Bruce to whom he imparted many of the fine and noble qualities that he possessed in abundance; and
 
WHEREAS, A native of Iowa City, Iowa, the Honorable John Y. McCollister graduated from the University of Iowa and joined the United States Navy during World War II; and
 
WHEREAS, The Honorable John Y. McCollister served as a radar officer on the USS Birmingham which was hit by a Japanese kamikaze strike on May 4, 1945; and
 
WHEREAS, A widely respected business and civic leader, the Honorable John Y. McCollister was the President of McCollister 8s Co. from 1960 to 1971 and from 1979 to 1986; and
 
WHEREAS, The Honorable John Y. McCollister ably served for three terms as Congressman from Nebraska's 2nd District from 1971 to 1979; and
 
WHEREAS, The hard work, sacrifice and dedication of the Honorable John Y. McCollister serve as an example to all; and
 
WHEREAS, The Honorable John Y. McCollister will be dearly missed and fondly remembered by his many relatives, friends and admirers; and
 
WHEREAS, To his beloved family, the Honorable John Y. McCollister imparts a legacy of faithfulness, service and dignity; now, therefore
 
BE IT RESOLVED, That we, the Mayor and the members of the Chicago City Council, assembled this thirteenth day of November, 2013, do hereby commemorate the Honorable John Y. McCollister for his grace-filled life and do hereby express our condolences to his family; and
 
 
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be presented to the family of the Honorable John Y. McCollister.
