WHEREAS, part-time "adjunct" faculty teach approximately 65% of the classes at City Colleges;

WHEREAS, part-time faculty teach the same courses and are required to have the same degree as tenured full-time professors;

WHEREAS, a part-time adjunct faculty at CCC teaching 3 classes per semester earns an average of $14,130 per year - well under the Federal Poverty Level (FPL) of $24,250 for a family of 4;

WHEREAS, part-time faculty adjuncts are often forced to teach at multiple schools, thus denying CCC students the extra help outside the classroom that is commonly needed from their professor;

WHEREAS, Chicago taxpayers are forced to pick up the financial cost for the estimated 1/3 of part-time faculty who receive governmental assistance;

WHEREAS, the part-time faculty at City Colleges are now three years without a raise or a contract;

WHEREAS, adjunct salaries at City Colleges are not at all competitive with other comparable community colleges as defined by the Illinois Community Colleges Board (ICCB); and

WHEREAS, the Board of Trustees of City Colleges is subject to appointment and jurisdiction of the Mayor of Chicago;

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, That the City Colleges of Chicago negotiate in good faith to reach a new collective bargaining agreement with the City Colleges' part-time adjunct union, CCCLOC; and that

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, The City Colleges of Chicago provide an equitable and living wage for its part-time adjunct faculty.
