BE IT ORDAINED BY THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF CHICAGO:

 

 

SECTION 1. Section 7-12-040 ofthe Municipal Code of Chicago is hereby amended by inserting the language underscored, as follows:

 

 

7-12-040 Impounding animals that are stray.

 

 

Any stray animal shall be immediately impounded by an animal control officer. Animal control officers operating in the field shall carry the equipment necessary to access the identifying information on microchips. In the event a stray animal is licensed, has a microchip, and its owner resides within three miles ofthe site of impoundment, the impounding officer shall return the animal to the owner immediately and the owner shall not be liable for the fee established in subsection 7-12-120(a)(1).

 

 

 

SECTION 2. This ordinance shall take effect upon passage and publication.
