RESOLUTION

WHEREAS, The Honorable Vaino Spencer has been called to eternal life by the wisdom of God at the age of 96; and

WHEREAS, The Chicago City Council has been informed of her passing by Alderman Edward M. Burke; and

WHEREAS, A resident of Los Angeles, the Honorable Vaino Spencer was a widely admired member of the judicial community; and

WHEREAS, The Honorable Vaino Spencer enjoyed a long and highly successful career as the first female black judge in California and one of the longest-serving jurists in state history; and

WHEREAS, The Honorable Vaino Spencer was appointed to the Los Angeles Municipal Court in 1961 and served on the Superior Court and state appeals court before retiring in 2007; and

WHEREAS, The Honorable Vaino Spencer was a pioneer for both women and people of color on the bench locally, regionally and nationally; and

WHEREAS, A voracious reader, the Honorable Vaino Spencer was current with national and world events and loved to discuss politics; and

WHEREAS, In addition to her professional achievements, the Honorable Vaino Spencer founded the Black Women Lawyers Association of Los Angeles and co-founded the National Association of Women Judges; and

WHEREAS, The hard work, sacrifice and dedication of the Honorable Vaino Spencer serve as an example to all; and

WHEREAS, Her love of life and ability to live it to the fullest endeared the Honorable Vaino Spencer to her family members, friends and all who knew her, and enabled her to enrich their lives in ways they will never forget; and

WHEREAS, The Honorable Vaino Spencer was an individual of great integrity and accomplishment who will be dearly missed and fondly remembered by her many relatives, friends and admirers; and

WHEREAS, To her beloved family, the Honorable Vaino Spencer imparts a legacy of faithfulness, service and dignity; now, therefore

BE IT RESOLVED, That we, the Mayor and the members of the Chicago City Council, assembled this ninth day of November, 2016, do hereby commemorate the Honorable Vaino Spencer for her grace-filled life and do hereby express our condolences to her family; and

 

 

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be presented to the family of the Honorable Vaino Spencer.
