RESOLUTION

 

 

WHEREAS, Richard Tilley is a distinguished veteran of Britain's Royal Army who served his native England at the close of World War II; and

 

WHEREAS, Richard Tilley led the Chicago City Council in the Pledge of Allegiance at its July 26, 2017, meeting; and

 

WHEREAS, A 91-year-old resident of the Wicker Park community, Richard Tilley was recommended for the honor of leading the Pdege of Allegiance by Alderman Proco "Joe" Moreno (1st) and Alderman Edward M. Burke (14 ); and

 

WHEREAS, Richard Tilley entered the Royal Army at the age of 18 and completed his military training as the war in Germany ended; and

 

WHEREAS, By the time Richard Tilley arrived in the Pacific Theater of Operations in June of 1945 the Japanese had also surrendered; and

 

WHEREAS, Richard Tilley subsequently served for three years as an Army signalman "bashing out Morris Code" in India; and

 

WHEREAS, Richard Tilley re-entered civilian life in 1948 and worked for a printing company in England; and

 

WHEREAS, Richard Tilley eventually emigrated to the United States and arrived in Chicago on June 26, 1962; and

 

WHEREAS, Richard Tilley joined Royal Zenith where he was extremely successful and retired in 1996 as Senior Vice President of Service for North America and Canada; and

 

WHEREAS, A resident of Lincoln Park for several years, Richard Tilley moved to Wicker Park in 1976 where he became active in the Wicker Park Garden Club; end

 

WHEREAS, A member of our "Greatest Generation," Richard Tilley is an individual who is exceedingly worthy of our honor and esteem; now, therefore

 

BE IT RESOLVED, That we, the Mayor and the members of the Chicago City Council, assembled this sixth day of September, 2017, do hereby express our gratitude to Richard Tilley on his military service and civic contributions; and

 

 

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That a suitable parchment copy of this resolution be presented to Richard Tilley.
