BEST WISHES EXTENDED TO THE MONASTERO FAMILY ON THE CLOSING OF THE MONASTERO RISTORANTE

AFTER 55 YEARS

 

WHEREAS, Monastero's Ristorante, a 39th Ward landmark located at 3935 West Devon, is closing its doors on November 18, 2017, after 55 years of business; and

 

WHEREAS, The Chicago City Council has been informed of this prestigious occasion by Alderman Margaret Laurino; and

 

WHEREAS, Founded in 1962 as La Canopy, by Joseph and Salvatore Monastero and their sister Gina Monastero, the restaurant has been a vital part of the Chicago's northwest side community; and

 

WHEREAS, Doors to the current Monastero's opened on February 6, 1967. The menu featured authentic homemade Sicilian cuisine in a setting that highlights Sicilian traditions and culture; and

 

WHEREAS, Over the years, Monastero's expanded to include their Garden Room and banquet facilities, the Cantina Room (known as the Rose Room), the Botticelli Room, and Gina's Banquet Room; and

 

WHEREAS, In addition to fine dining, the Monastero Family hosted popular events such as their Wine Festival and the Bel Canto Foundation Opera Contest Evenings where aspiring young vocal artists were given the unique opportunity to perform Italian repertoire and gain experience while competing for monetary prizes, and

 

WHEREAS Under the guidance of Joe Monastero Sr. with his wife Martha, son Joe, Jr. and daughter Maria Giorgia Monastero Orszula and Salvy's daughter, Maria Elizabeth Monastero Bueno, the Monasteros have continued their family tradition of delicious Sicilian cuisine and exceptional dining established 55 years ago; and

 

WHEREAS, Throughout the years, the Monasteros became much more than neighborhood restaurateurs. They are beloved members of the community's extended family. For the past 55 years, the Monastero's Ristorante has been the place to gather, not only for delicious Italian cuisine, but also to commemorate many of life's moments, joyous family celebrations, and special occasions; now, therefore

Be It Resolved, That the Mayor and members of the City Council of the City of Chicago, assembled in meeting this twenty-first day of November 2017, do hereby bid the Monastero Family arriverderci, send them grazie mille for 55 years of fine dining, and wish them tanti auguri and buona fortuna in their future endeavors; and
