RESOLUTION

WHEREAS, Wayne Huizenga Sr. has been called to eternal life by the wisdom of God at the age of 80; and

WHEREAS, The Chicago City Council has been informed of his passing by Alderman Edward M. Burke; and

WHEREAS, Wayne Huizenga Sr. was a widely admired entrepreneur who was born in the Chicago suburbs; and

WHEREAS, The expansive business empire of Wayne Huizenga Sr. included his ownership of Blockbuster Video, AutoNation, Waste Management Inc., and sports teams such as the Miami Dolphins, the Florida Panthers and the Florida Marlins; and

WHEREAS, A man of remarkable achievement, Wayne Huizenga Sr. was raised in a family of garbage haulers and dropped out of college to launch his own garbage hauling company in Florida; and

WHEREAS, In 1968 Wayne Huizenga Sr. merged his company with one owned by his uncles to form Waste Management Inc; and

WHEREAS, Wayne Huizenga Sr. resigned from the company in 1984 and took $100 million in stock; and

WHEREAS, Wayne Huizenga Sr. purchased Blockbuster Video in 1987 and built what was then a small operation into a national chain that included more than 1,800 stores; and

WHEREAS, In 1994 Wayne Huizenga Sr. sold Blockbuster Video to Viacom for $8 billion; and

WHEREAS, Among his many other investments, Wayne Huizenga Sr purchased Republic Waste Industries in 1995 which was renamed Republic Industries as it branched out to buy Alamo Rent-A-Car and National Car Rental; and;

WHEREAS, The staggering array of successful ventures controlled by Wayne Huizenga Sr. made him a cult-like figure in the world of business; and

WHEREAS, The hard work and dedication of Wayne Huizenga Sr. serve as an example to all; and

WHEREAS, His love of life and ability to live it to the fullest endeared Wayne Huizenga Sr. to his family members, friends and all who knew him, and enabled him to enrich their lives in ways they will never forget; and

WHEREAS, Wayne Huizenga Sr. was an individual of great integrity and accomplishment who will be dearly missed and fondly remembered by his many relatives, friends and admirers; and

WHEREAS, To his two sons, Wayne Jr. and Scott, Wayne Huizenga Sr. imparts a legacy of faithfulness, service and dignity; now, therefore

BE IT RESOLVED, That we, the Mayor and the members of the Chicago City Council, assembled this twenty-eighth day of March, 2018, do hereby commemorate Wayne Huizenga Sr. for his grace-filled life and do hereby express our condolences to his family; and

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
