RESOLUTION

WHEREAS, Alan Stone has been called to eternal life by the wisdom of God at the age of 90; and

WHEREAS, The Chicago City Council has been informed of his passing by Alderman Edward M. Burke; and

WHEREAS, A longtime resident of the Streeterville neighborhood, Alan Stone was a widely admired business leader and philanthropist; and

WHEREAS, Born in Chicago, Alan Stone helped manage Stone Container Corporation, a company started by his father and grandfather in 1926; and

WHEREAS, During his long and highly distinguished career, Alan Stone served as Senior Vice President and as a member of the Board of Directors of Stone Container Corporation which became one of the largest linerboard, craft and corrugated container companies in the world; and

WHEREAS, Alan Stone ran the company's manufacturing operation, led its purchasing and transportation operations and was the President of five railroads: the Apache Railway Company, the Atlanta & St. Andrews Bay Railway Company, the Bay Line Railroad, the North Louisiana and Gulf Railroad and the Central Louisiana and Gulf Railroad; and

WHEREAS, During his three decades of retirement, Alan Stone immersed himself in charitable causes and worked to end homelessness; and

WHEREAS, Under his leadership of Alan Stone , his small family charity called the Emergency Fund became the largest provider of homeless prevention assistance services in the nation; and

WHEREAS, Alan Stone worked with Northwestern Memorial Hospital to reestablish the Norman and Ida Stone Institute of Psychiatry at the Gaiter Pavilion which was initiated by his parents; and

WHEREAS, Alan Stone was also a leading figure at the Jewish United Fund of Metropolitan Chicago and JVS Chicago; and

WHEREAS, The hard work, sacrifice and dedication of Alan Stone serve as an example to all; and

WHEREAS, His love of life and ability to live it to the fullest endeared Alan Stone to his family members, friends and all who knew him, and enabled him to enrich their lives in ways they will never forget; and

WHEREAS, Alan Stone was an individual of great integrity and accomplishment who will be dearly missed and fondly remembered by his many relatives, friends and admirers; and

WHEREAS, To his wife Joan and his beloved family, Alan Stone imparts a legacy of faithfulness, service and dignity; now, therefore

BE IT RESOLVED, That we, the Mayor and the members of the Chicago City Council, assembled this twenty-eighth day of March, 2018, do hereby commemorate Alan Stone for his grace-filled life and do hereby express our condolences to his family; and
