WHEREAS, the City of Chicago has 12,986 vacant lots in its inventory throughout the city's fifty wards and seventy-seven neighborhoods; and,

 

WHEREAS, the Department of Streets & Sanitation [DSS) routinely works to ensure the maintenance of these lots, ensuring cleanliness through various means; and,

 

WHEREAS, DSS Commissioner has allowed in the past various alternative measures to assist in hampering the vegetation growth on these lots, including the use of herbicides and woodchips; and,

 

WHEREAS, this Council has sought innovative measures ensuring the cleanliness and appearance of these city-owned lots; now therefore,

 

BE IT ORDERED BY THE CITY COUNCIL OF CHICAGO:

 

The Commissioner of the Department of Streets & Sanitation be authorized and encouraged to enter into third-party agreements with local landscaping business owners licensed in Chicago to accept clean wood chip donations to the Department for the benefit of the public good in assisting with the maintenance of city-owned lots within Chicago.
