SUBSTITUTE ORDINANCE
WHEREAS, the Polish Highlanders Alliance of America was founded in Chicago in 1929 to organize Polish highlanders spread throughout the United States and Canada, into a single, cohesive highlander family, while promoting their love for the Highlander dialect, literature, and Podhalan art; and
WHEREAS, the Polish Highlanders Alliance focuses on uniting persons connected with Southern Poland, including Podhale, Orawa, Pieniny and Spisz; and
WHEREAS, the Polish Highlanders Alliance was founded by Karol Stach, Antoni Zygmuntowicz, Franciszek Cyrwus, Stanislaw Tatar, Stanislaw Bachleda, Anna Topor, and Henryk Lokanski; and
WHEREAS, the Polish Highlanders Alliance has helped churches, schools, charity organizations, and young people by sharing love their love of their homeland and tradition; and
WHEREAS, the Polish Highlanders headquarters, known as the "Highlander Home," is located in the 14th Ward along Archer Avenue on the Southwest Side; and
WHEREAS, the Polish Highlanders Alliance has lasted continuously for 87 years and consists of 86 chapters, including more than 3,000 members; and
WHEREAS, the Polish Highlanders Alliance has its own radio station, WPNA 1490, and publishes quarterly periodicals to inform the public about current organizational issues; and
WHEREAS, the Polish Highlanders Alliance has perpetuated its love for Poland by designating a part of Archer Avenue with the honorary name "Gorale Podhalanscy Way"; NOW THEREFORE,
BE IT ORDAINED BY THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF CHICAGO:
SECTION 1. Pursuant to an ordinance heretofore passed by the City Council which
allows for the erection of honorary street-name signs, the Commissioner of the Department of
Transportation shall take all necessary action for the standardization of South Archer Avenue,
between South Hamlin and South Lawndale as " Gorale Podhalanscy Way."
SECTION 2. This ordinance shall take effect upon its passage and publication.
