RESOLUTION
WHEREAS, Barbara Steiner has been called to eternal life by the wisdom of God; and
WHEREAS, The Chicago City Council has been informed of her passing by Alderman Edward M. Burke; and
WHEREAS, Barbara Steiner was a Holocaust survivor and the loving wife of the late Arnold; and
WHEREAS, Barbara Steiner was the much-adored mother of Marvin and Muriel to whom she imparted many of the fine and noble qualities that she possessed in abundance; and
WHEREAS, Part of the Warsaw Ghetto Uprising, Barbara Steiner lost more than 50 members of her family to the Holocaust, including her father, mother and two siblings; and
WHEREAS, Barbara Steiner met her future husband at the Hasag Pelcery concentration camp; and
WHEREAS, On the same day that Russian troops liberated the camp in 1945 the couple were married; and
WHEREAS, In 1952 the Steiners began their new life in Chicago where her husband found work as a butcher for Sinai 48; and
WHEREAS, The couple moved to Skokie in the late 1970s where Barbara Steiner became a founding member of the Illinois Holocaust Museum and Education Center; and
WHEREAS, In 2006 Barbara Steiner published a book, "Courage and Resistance: Remembering the Warsaw Ghetto Uprising"; and
WHEREAS, The courage, sacrifice and dedication of Barbara Steiner serve as an example to all; and
WHEREAS, Barbara Steiner was an individual of great integrity and courage who will be dearly missed and fondly remembered by her many relatives, friends and admirers; and
WHEREAS, To her beloved family, Barbara Steiner imparts a legacy of faithfulness, service and dignity; now, therefore
BE IT RESOLVED, That we, the Mayor and the members of the Chicago City Council, assembled this twenty-seventh day of June, 2018, do hereby commemorate Barbara Steiner for her grace-filled life and do hereby express our condolences to her family; and
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be presented to the family of Barbara! Steiner.
