RESOLUTION
WHEREAS, Lewis Myers Jr. has been called to eternal life by the wisdom of God at the age of 70; and
WHEREAS, The Chicago City Council has been informed of his passing by Alderman Edward M. Burke; and
WHEREAS, Lewis Myers Jr. was a widely admired member of the legal community and the loving husband of Tina; and
WHEREAS, Lewis Myers Jr. was the much-adored father of Lewis Myers III and the grandfather of one to whom he imparted many of the fine and noble qualities that he possessed in abundance; and
WHEREAS, Lewis Myers Jr. was the dear brother of Florence; and
WHEREAS, A trailblazing Chicago lawyer, Lewis Myers Jr. was hailed as a champion of civil rights; and
WHEREAS, Lewis Myers Jr. graduated from Howard University and the University of Mississippi Law School; and
WHEREAS, Lewis Myers Jr. began his career by working for the North Mississippi Rural Legal Services where he represented mostly poor and indigent clients; and
WHEREAS, Lewis Myers Jr. worked as an attorney for the Rainbow PUSH Coalition in Chicago and was National Deputy Executive Director for the NAACP before establishing his own law firm in 1995; and
WHEREAS, Lewis Myers Jr. handled a number of high-profile cases including the defense of two young boys accused of murdering 11 -year-old Ryan Harris and challenging the school expulsions of African-American students in Decatur; and
WHEREAS, The hard work, sacrifice and dedication of Lewis Myers Jr. serve as an example to all; and
WHEREAS, His love of life and ability to live it to the fullest endeared Lewis Myers Jr. to his family members, friends and all who knew him, and enabled him to enrich their lives in ways they will never forget; and
WHEREAS, Lewis Myers Jr. was an individual of great integrity and accomplishment who will be dearly missed and fondly remembered by his many relatives, friends and admirers; and
WHEREAS, To his beloved family, Lewis Myers Jr. imparts a legacy of faithfulness, service and dignity; now, therefore
BE IT RESOLVED, That we, the Mayor and the members of the Chicago City Council, assembled this twenty-seventh day of June, 2018, do hereby commemorate Lewis Myers Jr. for his grace-filled life and do hereby express our condolences to his family; and
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be presented to the family of Lewis Myers Jr.
