CONGRATULATIONS EXTENDED TO COMMANDER WILLIAM R. LOONEY ON RETIREMENT FROM THE CHICAGO POLICE DEPARTMENT

 

WHEREAS, On November 15, 2018 Commander William R. Looney, Star #14, will retire from the Chicago Police Department following thirty-two years of dedicated public service; and

WHEREAS, The Chicago City Council has been informed of this occasion by the Honorable Margaret Laurino, Alderman of the 39th Ward; and

WHEREAS, Commander William R. Looney followed in the footsteps of his late father, William Sr., who was a retired CPD lieutenant. Since joining the force in 1986, his exemplar)1 career with the Chicago Police Department has spanned more than three decades. His experience covered many facets of policing including Detective in Violent Crimes, Gang Sergeant, and CAPS Sergeant. He was also a Lieutenant at headquarters where he held various positions in the Medical Section, Government Security Detail, Strategic Deployment, and CompStat, after which William was promoted to Captain; and

WHEREAS, In 2013 William Looney achieved the rank of Commander, and served the 19th District until 2015 when he was assigned to his current and final position as Commander of the 16th District, Jefferson Park Police, one of the largest districts in the City, encompassing die 39th, 38th, 41st, 45th, 36th, 30th, 31st, and 29th wards; and

WHEREAS, In his years with the Department Commander William R. Looney has received 66 awards for a variety of achievements, including a 2004 Crime Reduction, Department Commendation, Lifesaving, Democratic National Convention and NATO Summit Service, a Presidential Election Deployment, and a Unit Meritorious Performance Award; and

WHEREAS, William devoted thirty-two years of public service to the people of the City of Chicago, working to ensure that the city remain a safe, healthy and vibrant community it is today. Throughout a long and distinguished tenure, Commander William R. Looney upheld the finest traditions of the law enforcement community and through hard work, commitment and dedication to duty, earning the respect and admiration of colleagues and the community; and

WHEREAS, Dedication to and fulfillment of the motto of the Chicago Police Department - "We Serve and Protect" ;-exacts a substantial physical and emotional toll not only on the officers who must daily cope with the stress and danger of being life's arbitrator for countless citizens, but also on their family members. William will celebrate this milestone in his life along with his mazing wife, Heidi, a retired officer from the 19th District and his adored children at his side; now, therefore

BE IT RESOLVED, That we the Mayor and members of the City Council of the City of Chicago, gathered here this fourteenth day of November 2018, do hereby commend Commander William R. Looney for his outstanding career achievements and express out most heartfelt wishes for a pleasant retirement; and

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be prepared and presented to Commander William R. Looney as a sign of our honor, gratitude, and respect.
